As part of a $3.3 billion project, a new unpowered FPSO platform (commissioned by Total Oil & Gas and built by Samsung Heavy Industries (Korea)) is to be fitted out at a recently developed shore fabrication yard in the port of Lagos, Nigeria. The project required real-time, comprehensive and collective training for two Tow and 12 Tug Masters.

The project required real-time, comprehensive and collective training for two Tow and 12 Tug Masters.

Phase 1 – Initial & Proving Navigation Simulation Studies

CARES Maritime Division was commissioned to conduct:

  • An initial simulation investigation to determine FPSO access in the port of Lagos to a potential new-build shore fabrication facility in Nigeria (2013).
  • A ‘Proving Simulation’ to establish FPSO port access for arrival, turn and departure between the Lagos Fairway buoy and the Berthing Basin (2016).

Phase 2 – Tow and Tug Master Navigation Simulation Training

CARES Maritime Division was commissioned to:

  • Design bespoke, real-time and collective simulation training for two Tow and 12 Tug Masters for arrival and turn of the FPSO platform at the port of Lagos.
  • The Egina FPSO Platform (335m length overall by 60m beam) successfully entered the port of Lagos on 23 January 2018.
SERVICES PROVIDED:
Phase 1 - Initial & Proving Navigation Simulation Studies Services Provided Included:
  • Create: Navigationally accurate simulation electronic charts of the port and agreed Berthing Basin design.
  • Create: Bespoke design models for the FPSO (arrival, turn and departure) and tugs providing real-life capacities, capabilities and dimensions for a real-time Full Mission Bridge Simulator.
  • Provide: FPSO access Baseline Statements and recommendations to include: dredging (eg channels and Berthing Basin dimensions); operations (eg tug capabilities and reconfigurations); environment (eg wind & tidal stream limitations); and port management.
  • Provide: FPSO/tug-handling advice to the appointed Tow Master when conducting the FPSO’s arrival, turn and departure manoeuvres.
  • Highlight: Key port management and FPSO-handling ‘enabling activities’ that are required to achieve safe access within Lagos port limits (ie from and to the Fairway buoy).
  • Provide: Final comprehensive and analysed written reports for input to the client’s Tow Manual.
  • Phase 2 - Tow and Tug Master Navigation Simulation Training Services Provided Included:
  • Create: Navigationally accurate and up to date simulation electronic charts of the port of Lagos and the Berthing Basin.
  • Provide: A Training Setting paper for the conduct of the simulation adhering to previously proven (by CARES) and agreed operational and environmental Baseline Statements.
  • Provide and Manage: Inter-connected Full Mission Bridge and Tug simulators for collective Tow and Tug Master real-time training.
  • Tow Master Training: Operating and conducting transits with up to five tugs in direct (ie attached) support.
  • Tug Master Training: General tug manoeuvre capabilities and specifically for the 10 tug re-configuration (ie changing position) evolutions required for arrival and turning.
  • Provide: Final comprehensive and fully assessed written report with further Lessons Identified, observations and recommendations.
