Occupational Hygiene

CARES Group was appointed to conduct a Chemical Exposure Survey on the Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, the Kwame Nkrumah installed in the Jubilee Oil Field. CARES Group was responsible for conducting personal exposure monitoring for personnel working around or with benzene and glutaraldehyde.

The client identified that a Health Risk Assessment had not been completed and that there was no record of information about workforce Similar Exposure Groups (SEG’s). Similarly, there were no specific exposure profiles for physical, chemical and biological agents identifiable with the FPSO operations.

As a result of this CARES Group completed an Occupational Hygiene Risk Assessment. The assessment assessed activities on board the FPSO focusing primarily on (but not limited to) environmental factors; and, chemical, physical and biological agents.

The assessment identified the majority of the work activities within the three main departments, identified potential occupational hazards and how the hazards are managed; identified SEG’s and established hazard profiles for each one.

Passive Sampling Badges were used to measure personal exposure to benzene following method reference MDHS88 and Charcoal Sorbent Tubes following BSEN 13649. Personal exposure to glutaraldehyde was measured using 226-119,2,4 DNPH treated sorbent tubes following reference NIOSH 2016.

CARES Group produced a detailed Occupational Hygiene Action Plan and the project resulted in improved Occupational Hygiene Management on board the FPSO.

CARES Group continues to support the management of the Jubilee Oil Field.
